Clean up your space and give your old, broken, and unwanted old gadgets a chance at a new life by dropping them off at any of our participating stores.
With the continuous release of new gadgets and devices, many Filipinos are keeping up with the times and aiming for those well-deserved upgrades. After all, these latest devices allow us to experience the best speeds to access apps and online content that keep us connected, informed, and entertained.
But what happens to the old and outdated devices that we leave behind? Take all these collectively and we are faced with a growing concern about electronic waste or e-waste.
Our e-waste must not get stuck in our homes, nor get thrown to end up in landfills – as these may have unwanted consequences for our families, our environment, and our communities.
A lot of people make the common mistake of storing and hoarding old electronics at home. While this may seem harmless, keeping our e-waste not only takes up precious space and collects dust but also foregoes the many benefits of e-waste recycling to the circular economy and to the environment.
E-waste can be recycled to make new electronics, effectively reducing the need to extract rare metals and other finite resources from the earth and making the electronics industry more sustainable. In the process, e-waste recycling also supports the skilling and livelihood of many Filipinos in the circular economy.
Meanwhile, some people make the mistake of disposing e-waste along with regular waste. Given that e-waste contains hazardous components, dumping them in our landfills may lead to pollution and contamination and further cause the spread of diseases that affect humans and animals.
Recognizing the importance of responsible e-waste management, PLDT and Smart launched the “Be Kind. Recycle.” program. This initiative aims to facilitate e-waste recycling and provide Filipinos with accessible and convenient means to properly dispose of their old phones, tablets, routers, and other devices.
Once collected, e-waste is dismantled and segregated, removing hazardous components and separating them from recyclable materials like plastics, metals, and precious minerals. Meanwhile, the residual waste is disposed of through encapsulation.
This whole process is performed by accredited e-waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities that ensure compliance with various environmental, labor, and data privacy regulations and standards.
The good news is that the “Be Kind. Recycle.” program is expanding! More PLDT and Smart stores are now accepting your old electronics for responsible disposal.
