Perfect Classic Feel-Good Movies to Watch on a Rainy Day

Got the rainy day blues? Studies report that the wet weather puts a damper on people’s moods due to the absence of sunlight, which causes a dip in the body’s serotonin levels. Fight the urge to let the dank weather influence your feelings by watching these five comforting movies. They may have been released years ago, but these feel-good classics are all packed with laugh-out-loud moments, emotional scenes that tug at your heartstrings, and triumphant endings that will lift your spirits.

Pitch Perfect: Sing-Along Edition (2015)

Watch and sing your way out of that “blah” state of mind alongside The Barden Bellas. This special sing-along edition plays the lyrics to all the songs Beca (Anna Kendrick), Aubrey (Anna Camp), Chloe (Brittany Snow), and their college a cappella crew perform as they work their way up to nationals. If “Cups” and “Party in the USA” don’t manage to raise your serotonin levels, hilarious one-liners from Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) will surely do the trick!

Why you should watch it: This underdog film has a great ensemble energy and aca-amazing harmonies that will banish rainy-day blues.

Back to the Future (1985)

A beloved film trilogy that combines sci-fi, romance, and comedy, Back to the Future starts off with Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) in the year 1985. Thanks to a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), Marty accidentally gets transported 30 years into the past and unknowingly prevents his parents from meeting and falling in love! Seeking the help of Past Doc to return to the present, Marty finds creative ways to repair his mistakes—all while making sure he does not drastically change the future and get wiped out of existence.

Why you should watch it: Joining Marty on his crazy, time-bending adventure will make you forget you’re stuck at home.

Notting Hill (1999)

Ever imagined what it would be like to date your favorite actor or singer? This romantic comedy puts you in the shoes of William Thacker (Hugh Grant), a bumbling bookstore owner whose world collides with Hollywood star Anna Scott (Julia Roberts). With its relatively simple plotline, unforgettable lines (“I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love me.”), and a comical supporting cast (hint: fast-forward to the dinner party), it’s no surprise that Notting Hill is an enduring classic enjoyed by all ages.

Why you should watch it: Roberts’ megawatt smile is enough to chase the rain clouds away, but you should also watch it to discover why Richard Curtis is hailed as one of the best rom-com screenwriters.

Forrest Gump (1994)

Tom Hanks received an Oscar award for his endearing portrayal of Forrest Gump, a kind-hearted man who manages to live an extraordinary life despite having a subpar IQ. While waiting for his bus to arrive, Gump chats up a stranger and shares memorable moments—teaching Elvis Presley to dance, meeting two US presidents, becoming an original investor in Apple, and running a three-year marathon, to name a few—as he discovers his life’s true purpose.

Why you should watch it: See it to let Forrest’s relentless optimism rub off on you.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)

Relatable head-in-the-clouds Asian protagonist (Lana Condor)? Check. Swoon-worthy jock with a penchant for saying “whoa” (Noah Centineo)? Check. Fake relationship turned real? Check. Catchy songs you’d want to hear over and over again? Check. This young-adult-novel-turned-hit-teen-movie ticks all the right boxes and makes you want to relive the euphoric highs and crushing lows of a first love.

Why you should watch it: Watching Lara Jean and Peter K get together will make you feel like you’re drinking a mug of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows. (Also, watch it so you can continue binge-watching the next two movies of the trilogy!)
