Volleyball fans, rejoice! The Premier Volleyball League is back with a season-ender filled with show-stopping matches among the best all-Filipino women’s volleyball teams at present. Drawing from its success last season where crowd favorite Tots Carlos was recognized as the season’s MVP, the PVL 2023 boasts a formidable lineup that will surely keep you on the edge of your seats once again.
A record number of 12 teams will battle for the top spot bannered by the defending champions Creamline Cool Smashers. The conference will also see the debut of two new teams: the Galeries Tower Highrisers and the Nxled Chameleons.
The Premier Volleyball League, formerly known as the Shakey’s V-League, is a women’s professional league that was established back in 2004. Originally catering to collegiate teams, the association has welcomed corporate clubs and other non-collegiate teams to its fray starting in 2011, making the pool of players much more diverse and dynamic.
With all teams eyeing a seat in the final four, others are also looking forward to a more level playing field. Defending champions Creamline Cool Smashers is also gearing up for its biggest challenge yet after losing eight-time Best Setter Jia Morado, who is now playing for the Japan V-League.
For the elimination round, all 12 teams will be playing in a single round robin format leading to exciting pairings that will allow fans to see all of their favorite groups go head-to-head with the other teams. The top four teams will advance to the best-of-three semis followed by the finals.
The PVL 2023 All-Filipino Conference kicked off with a triple header last Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum with the Creamline Cool Smashers, Cignal HD Spikers, and Nxled Chameleons winning against the Choco Mucho Flying Titans, PLDT Home Fiber High Speed Hitters, and Gerflor Defenders respectively.
The conference will run from October 16 through December, with the semis and finals to be played at the Philsports Arena, the Smart Araneta Coliseum, and the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
The PVL is also bringing the game closer to fans by introducing more out-of-town matches. According to Sherwin Malonzo, Competition Director of the PVL, the conference will be hosted in various locations around the country, including Batangas, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Antipolo, and Santa Rosa, Laguna.
